Sensational Sedona
Red rocks. Monumental works of nature. Spectacular formations carved by water a long, long time ago give Sedona a truly sensational setting in the desert that is otherwise, well, desert.
Situated in the Verde Valley of Arizona, the drive to Sedona from the Phoenix airport involves making your way north on a highway through mostly flat plateaus and around occasional mountains, until you arrive in the valley where the surrounding mountains open to reveal an amazing site.
Bell's Rock
Nestled inside the mountain range is a town surrounded by red sandstone rock formations that are unique to this part of the world. Amazingly beautiful when illuminated by the early morning or late afternoon sunlight, the formations have been named after things that each one resembles. The Cathedral, Bell’s Rock, The Chimney and other names come remarkably close to describing what each formation looks like from it’s optimal viewing area.
Chimney Rock
Right in the middle of these truly remarkable and enormous protrusions from the ground is the cute little town of Sedona, population 10,000. Tourism is the local industry, however some high-quality boutique shops, galleries and restaurants are thriving there. It is also a very popular location for second homes of the rich and famous. Many Hollywood movies have been filmed in the area and one look at the breathtaking landscapes easily explains why.

Sedona has changed a great deal since I was there last.

One important thing I have learned about travel is that if you have been to a place, but haven’t been back there in more than 10 years, it has probably changed significantly. Sometimes there is enough change that you wouldn’t recognize the place.
